Food sensitivity assessment program
The most reliable method of sorting out whether diet is having unwanted effects on your child is through specific dietary investigation.
The food sensitivity assessment program offered by Jocelyn Hunter Clarke (Accredited Practising Dietitian & Accredited Nutritionist) at Nutrition Solutions is a comprehensive dietary investigation program designed in accordance with the guidelines provided by the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Department of Immunology.
The food sensitivity assessment program aims to
- determine if food sensitivity is present through the process of a short term elimination diet trial to see if the symptoms or behaviours improve
- avoid unnecessary long term dietary restriction by identifying the specific foods or chemical culprits through a step-by-step process of food challenges
- establish individual threshold and liberalise the diet as much as possible to ensure adequate nutrition for growth & development
What to expect
The food chemical sensitivity assessment program is run over three individual consultations with the Jocelyn. If you live outside the metropolitan area, phone consultations are offered.
Before the first consultation you will be sent an information package including assessment forms to complete and bring along to your first consultation.
At first consultation Jocelyn will assess and determine the appropriate level of elimination to suit your your child. There are varying levels of the elimination ranging from a quite liberal, user friendly elimination diet to an extremely restrictive elimination diet. To help you out with the practical issues, you will receive the Getting Started kit .This kit includes many handy resources such as instruction booklets, commercial shopping guides, meal plans and recipes. The elimination trial usually runs for approximately 4 weeks.
At the second consultation your child's response to the elimination diet trial will be assessed and the plan for food challenges will be discussed. The food challenge phase is a step by step process designed to find out which chemicals in the diet are triggering the unwanted effects.
At the third consultation Jocelyn will discuss the results of the food challenges and provide advice on how to manage the diet once the specific triggers have been identified. This usually involves a nutrition assessment of your child's food intake and advice on liberalising the diet as much as possible to ensure adequate nutrition for growth and development
What about nutrition concerns
Many food sensitive children are fussy eaters and some may have inadequate diets as a result. The initial focus will be to find enough accepted foods to run the diet elimination trial, do the challenges to identify foods that need to be avoided longer term, and then attend to good eating habits. In practice, many children begin to develop better eating habits and become less fussy on the elimination diet because they feel better.
To ensure adequate nutrition over the food sensitivity assessment period, a multi vitamin supplement is recommended.
