For optimal health you should aim to have a body weight within the healthy weight range according to their BMI. BMI is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. BMI = Wt (kg)/Ht (m2)

For example a person who is 1.65m tall and weighs 64kg has a BMI of 24.

The BMI ranges according to the World Health Organisation include

        • 18.5-25  healthy range
        • 25-30     overweight
        • >30       obese

Another way of assessing if excess body fat is potentially putting your health at risk is to measure your waist circumference. The guidelines for waist circumference according to Australian health authorities (NHMRC) include

Men waist circumference

        • >94 cm    increased risk  
        • >102cm   substantially increased risk

Women waist circumference

        • >80cm   increased risk  
        • >88cm   substantially increased risk
